NATURE CALLING
‘Dawn After Night, Spring After Winter’ is an inspiring project made by artists David Blandy & Daniel Locke commissioned by Surrey Hills Arts, to make an evocative game publication of local mythologies and the natural world that will take players through two different inspiring nature trails.
This project is part of a national arts programme, Nature Calling, connecting and deepening engagement with the landscape. The aim is to listen to our communities and ensure our landscapes are a place for everyone.
Location:
The first trail will start at the National Trust’s Box Hill ’s Natural Play Trail in the Surrey Hills and the other is at Hutchinson’s Bank, a London Wildlife Trust nature reserve near the residential community of New Addington in Croydon.
How to play: Click on the trail to follow instructions, find the map and where to start.

The artists collaborated with participants from the local community of New Addington and the Surrey Hills area around Boxhill to create the game. It can be played while walking the trails in situ or while at home as an imaginative exercise; bringing the opportunity to reflect on nature to everyone.
Lyrics inspired by this landscape, written by Still Shadey, a MOBO award winning rapper from New Addington are woven throughout the game, framing each scene.
The game publication is both physical and digital, a free full colour illustrated downloadable booklet, also disseminated as an interactive experience on smart-phones and tablets.
