5: The glade
Through the gate, keep to the left, on the track, and you’ll find yourself in a grassy glade, a beautiful walkway of chalky grassland. The glade is a beacon of life, a home to a multitude of plants, flowers, spiders and bugs. Can you see something you’ve never seen before? Maybe it could become part of your story, as a character, a wonder or a threat. In summer look out for a bright green, oval and upright plant, with a single, tall spike that bears the spores. This is an Adder’s-tongue fern, that lives all year as a rhizome beneath the earth. It is a sleeper. But now it is awake. Let us be awake too. Now let’s build our story.
What sends them on their journey?
They need to reach a loved one
They need to find a cure
To find help
They must return home
They must find what they’ve lost
Invent something else
Describe the urgent event that has lead to your character being on a journey now. What was the moment when it was clear they must go? What delayed them until then?
